Obituary for Mary E. James Hicks

Age 90 of Pittsburgh, passed away peacefully on May 24, 2018. Born on October 2, 1927. Mary James Hicks, as well as her families, both father (Joseph James) and mother (Melissa Turfley James) were devoted members of Grace Memorial Presbyterian Church and it was a most important aspect of her life. Mary taught Sunday School and became a Deacon in the Church and enjoyed offering solace to the sick. She was among the first African American women to earn a degree in Nursing from the University of Pittsburgh and subsequently received a Master's Degree from the University of Michigan. She retired as a Professor of Nursing from the Mt. Mercy College of Los Angeles, California. Mary served in the U.S. Air Force having obtained the rank of Captain and she was stationed at Goose Bay, Labrador. She was one of the first African Americans to serve in this branch of the Military. MARY LOVED VINTAGE SENIOR CENTER. She enjoyed life and found it hard to stay at home. She went to Vintage Senior Center several times a week on the bus regardless of inclement weather. She had belonged to the drama club where she performed on stage as various characters. BUT, THE MOST IMPORTANT THING TO REMEMBER ABOUT MARY WAS THAT she was a "GIVING" person to family and friends. She had determination and independence and was compassionate, caring, kind and polite. Even as Dementia began to erase her memories and recollections, she did ALWAYS remember to say "Please" and "Thank You" for any and all of the services she received. Not even through nine years of her decline into Alzheimer’s Disease could rob her of her genuinely polite nature. She will be interred at the National Cemetery of the Alleghenies with full Military Honors. IN THE HEREAFTER, MAY THE GENTLE SOUL OF MARY JAMES HICKS BE RESTING COMFORTABLY. Arrangements by the Samuel J. Jones Funeral Home Inc.
